NOUMEA, New Caledonia (August 12, 2000 – Radio Australia)---About 500 members of the French armed forces in New Caledonia are taking part in a military exercise which simulates unrest in a South Pacific country.

The exercise is based on a fictitious country where two ethnic groups are engaged in a conflict.

Army officials say it reflects the possibility that a New Caledonian regiment could be called up for peacekeeping operations in the South Pacific.
