CHOLERA NUMBERS STILL UP AND DOWN IN FSM

PALIKIR, Pohnpei, FSM (August 22, 2000 – FSM Information Service)---Statistics from Pohnpei Hospital still show a seesaw pattern in the number of people being treated for suspected cholera.

On August 16, 8 people received treatment. This was down from 13 reported on August 15. Nine people were treated on August 17. Ten people were treated on August 18. The number dipped to 5 people receiving treatment on August 19, but zoomed up to 10 people receiving treatment on August 20.

Only six people were reported receiving treatment for suspected cholera on August 21.

This brings to a total 2,689 people who have received treatment for suspected cholera since April 17.

Of those, 1,389 were treated at the Pohnpei State Hospital Outpatient Department/Emergency Room; 588 were admitted to the hospital; 671 received treatment at dispensaries; and 41 were treated at private clinics.

Fifteen deaths have attributed to cholera since the epidemic began in April.

No cholera deaths have been reported since July 17.
