MCDONALDS RESTAURANT TO OPEN IN AMERICAN SAMOA IN SEPTEMBER

PAGO PAGO, American Samoa (August 21, 2000 PIDP/CPIS)--The first McDonald's restaurant in the territory is expected to open for business on September 29 and the fast-food restaurant's 70-plus local employees already are undergoing training to prepare for the official opening.

The local franchise is owned and operated by TRT Corporation, whose home office is in Australia.

The president of the company, Rep. Agaoleatu Charlie Tautolo, said construction of the restaurant building is expected to be completed by the end of the month, with installation of equipment and fixtures to follow.

Of the 2,000 job applications that were distributed, Rep. Agaoleatu said 700 applications were turned in for consideration. The selection process was than narrowed down to 400 applicants for interviews, with 70 some persons selected for employment.
