PORT MORESBY, Papua New Guinea (September 26, 2000 – ABC Australia)---Papua New Guinea's Attorney General has been told to order a coronial inquest into the death of a soldier shot by police in Port Moresby last weekend.

The incident has led to violent confrontations between soldiers and police, with mobs of angry soldiers rampaging through Port Moresby suburbs on Saturday, demanding revenge.

The soldier appears to have taken part in an armed robbery and was shot dead by police during the pursuit.

The PNG Cabinet has directed Attorney-General Sau Gabi to set up a coronial inquest into the shooting of the soldier.

Cabinet has also ordered Defense Force Commander Carl Marlpo to investigate the actions of soldiers involved in Saturday's rampage and to take disciplinary action against anyone found to have breached military regulations.
