PAPE‘ETE, French Polynesia (October 10, 2000 – Oceania Flash/SPC)---Police in Tahiti have launched an inquiry into the whereabouts of a 63-year-old American tourist who has been missing for over a week, the daily newspaper La Dépêche de Tahiti reports.

Initial reports say Roger Ferguson, a retired professor of medicine formerly from Oklahoma, was on vacation in French Polynesia with his family. He suddenly disappeared from the Royal Tahitien resort (near Pape‘ete) on October 3. He was last seen that day, close to lunchtime.

He was to have boarded a plane back to Los Angeles (he currently resides in Manzanita, California) two days later, but was nowhere to be seen at the airport.

Ferguson's family asked local police to start a formal investigation into his disappearance.

Authorities have appealed to the general public to provide any relevant information.
