PORT MORESBY, Papua New Guinea (October 13, 2000 - The National/PINA Nius Online)---Prime Minister Sir Mekere Morauta has announced Cabinet approval of a Memorandum of Agreement between Papua New Guinea and Australia relating to maritime search and rescue services.

Sir Mekere said the agreement would pave the way for PNG to share facilities and expertise with Australia and have in place a more coordinated search and rescue service in coastal waters.

"We need to be fully prepared to respond immediately and effectively to maritime disasters, including tsunamis," he said.

"Many lives have been lost because we are ill-equipped and do not have the expertise to respond promptly to emergencies at sea. This vital agreement will promote better search and rescue responses and save lives," he said.
