JAKARTA, Indonesia (November 1, 2000 – ABC Australia)---Indonesia has set today as the new deadline for the lowering of pro-independence flags in Irian Jaya, also known as West Papua.

Human rights monitors in West Papua say there has been a build up of security forces in the provincial capital, Jayapura.

Indonesia's national police chief, General Bimantoro, confirmed today's deadline but would not say what action police will take if pro-independence flags are not lowered.

Indonesia had extended its deadline for the separatist morning star flag to be lowered, but that date passed two weeks ago.

The last time action was taken to enforce Jakarta's ruling, up to 40 people died.
