PRESS RELEASE October 31, 2000

SOUTH PACIFIC TOURISM ORGANIZATION TO REDEVELOP WEBSITE

InternetFiji.com (Inet), an Internet development company based in Suva, Fiji has been contracted to redevelop the South Pacific Tourism Organization’s (SPTO) website – "South Pacific Islands Discover Paradise!" Work is already under way and it is anticipated that the website will be launched in March 2001 in time for Internationale Tourismus Borse (International Tourism Exchange), the world’s biggest travel show held annually in Berlin, Germany.

Jan Dunlop from InternetFiji.com says:

"The redeveloped SPTO website will be quite different from the existing one (http://www.tcsp.com/) due to the fact that the tourism sector now has a well developed internet presence which was not the case when it was originally launched. National Tourist Offices down to the smallest resorts now have their own web sites. The redeveloped SPTO website will focus on promoting destinations, driving traffic through to member’s existing web sites and providing member services online. SPTO will also take a hands on approach in maintaining the website in-house enabling timely updates and fast response to their members and general enquiries."

Christopher Cocker, SPTO’s Manager Marketing and Membership Services says:

"The revised website will serve as an important marketing tool for SPTO, its members and for tourism in the South Pacific region. It also demonstrates the fact that SPTO strives to be in the forefront of innovations in information technology. For the long term, it means SPTO will be in a position to better service the needs of its members in more cost-effective ways. We extend our appreciation to the European Union for funding this project."

The premise adopted by the website will be one of an ‘umbrella’ approach. Essentially, it will serve to be the source of all tourism information to and within the South Pacific. The website will be the regional hub and the websites of the National Tourists Offices (NTOs) and Tourism Industry Members (TIMs) become the links, feeding relevant and up to date tourism information. It will serve to entice web surfers to South Pacific Island destinations and provide direct links to National Tourist Offices (NTOs) and private sector members of SPTO. Web surfers can move around conveniently to find more detailed information on individual destinations, and see for themselves the products, services and facilities available and other related information.

Some special features of the website include a password protected back office exclusively available to members and an E shop where various products and services, like attendance at international travel fairs for instance, are offered online.
