AUSTRALIA’S FOREIGN MINISTER DOWNER ON PACIFIC TOUR

PORT MORESBY, Papua New Guinea (December 14, 2000 - Post-Courier/PINA Nius Online)---Australia’s Foreign Minister, Alexander Downer, will visit New Zealand Vanuatu, the Solomon Islands and Papua New Guinea as part of a week-long trip to several Pacific nations.

Mr. Downer first flew to New Zealand for two days of talks with Prime Minister Helen Clark. East Timor, Bougainville and trade issues will be among the topics to be considered.

These discussions will be followed by a session with New Zealand Foreign Minister Phil Goff tomorrow and Saturday, to further consider bilateral, regional and multilateral issues.

Mr. Downer then heads to Vanuatu for two days.

On Tuesday, Mr. Downer will make his third visit of the year to the Solomon Islands.

The Pacific trip will end in Papua New Guinea where Mr. Downer will meet with Prime Minister Sir Mekere Morauta, Foreign and Bougainville Affairs Minister Sir Michael Somare and key leaders from Bougainville.

Mr. Downer will also visit Bougainville.
