FIJI’S SPEIGHT HEARING DEFERRED

SUVA, Fiji Islands (January 1, 2000 – Fijilive)---The committal hearing for the George Speight treason case (resulting from the May 19 attempted coup) has been deferred until further notice.

This afternoon, the High Court announced that the hearing, scheduled for tomorrow, will not take place until they make a decision on whether the 114 witnesses should be allowed to testify.

Director of Public Prosecutions Jo Naigulevu said his office was concerned over the security of the witnesses.

Naigulevu also applied to the High Court to bar Chief Magistrate Salesi Temo from proceeding with the committal hearing and the oral preliminary enquiry tomorrow.
