SUVA, Fiji Islands (December 28, 2000 – Radio Australia)---The Fiji Visitors Bureau says a recent alert issued by New Zealand regarding an outbreak of leptospirosis in Fiji is out of date.

The disease, which causes high fever, is associated with close contact with rats and other mammals.

The bureau says the disease is under control and should not be a matter of concern for New Zealanders or any others who intend to visit Fiji as tourists.

It says there have been no new cases since August 1, with the outbreak confined entirely to a remote area.
