SUVA, Fiji Islands (January 1, 2000 - The Fiji Times/PINA Nius Online)---An object believed to be a meteorite has struck the center of French Polynesia's main island, Tahiti.

The AFP news agency reported that homes along the island’s western coast were shaken.

Witnesses who saw the falling object said it exploded with a blinding white light.

A Polynesian Geophysics Laboratory spokesperson said it was almost certainly an object falling from the skies, probably a meteorite or satellite debris.

An investigation is under way.
