SUVA, Fiji Islands (January 3, 2001 - FM96/PINA Nius Online)---Twenty percent of young children in Fiji are undernourished, with four out of 10 living in extreme poverty, according to the UNICEF State of the World's Children Report 2001.

It identifies poverty as the reason children are malnourished, abused and exploited and missing school.

The report states that poor and undereducated parents lack the information needed to provide optimum care for their children.

The report says 12 percent of children born between 1995 and last year had a below average birth weight.
