SUVA, Fiji Islands (January 8, 2001 - The Fiji Sun/PINA Nius Online)---A decision on who will be awarded Fiji's new public radio broadcasting bid will be made by the end of the month, the Ministry of Information has announced.

Commercial broadcaster Communications Fiji Limited is challenging the government-owned Fiji Broadcasting Corporation (Radio Fiji) for the tender, which has been opened for bidding for the first time.

The government has been providing Radio Fiji a $F 1.3 million (US$ 606,1909) a year subsidy to provide public service broadcasting and this expired at the end of December.

The Film and Television Unit, a branch of the Ministry of Information, has also tendered to provide the public broadcasting service.
