PALIKIR, Federated States of Micronesia (January 9, 2001 - FSM Information Service/PINA Nius Online)---Ninety-seven Federated States of Micronesia candidates have passed tests which allow them to join the United States military.

The Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery test is an examination to determine the eligibility of individuals interested in the U.S Armed Forces: Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force and Coast Guard.

Individuals must pass to be considered eligible for enlistment.

Fifty-six students from Pohnpei state passed, 25 from Yap, 21 from Chuuk, and eight from Kosrae.

Enlistment eligibility is one of the provisions of the Compact of Free Association, allowing Federated States of Micronesia citizens to serve in the US Armed Forces.

Foreign Affairs Acting Secretary Ieske Iehsi said it is an effective program that provides "opportunities for our young people to acquire the skills and background to participate in various areas of training otherwise unavailable in this country."

The test was administered late last year to 529 students from all four states.

The U.S. Embassy has that U.S. military recruiters will be coming to the Federated States of Micronesia soon to contact those interested in military service.

The embassy will notify each state of the scheduled arrival dates.
