PAGO PAGO, American Samoa (January 9, 2001 – Radio Australia)---Governor Tauese Sunia says residents of the U.S. Pacific territory must now be willing to pay more for the good quality services they have come to depend on from the government.

In the first speech of his second term as governor, Tauese hinted that residents soon will be asked to help cover the costs of government services through higher taxation.

He said the dependent mentality had to go, given that federal funding for the territory for the past decade has remained at US$ 23-million a year.

Tauese said that amount is not enough to keep the government running at its current pace.
