SAIPAN, Northern Mariana Islands (January 9, 2001 - Marianas Variety/PINA Nius Online)---The Northern Marianas Commonwealth Utilities Corp. has informed Governor Pedro Tenorio of its plans to implement regulations to "regulate" telephone services.

Its plan is in line with recent concerns by customers regarding telephone service quality and rates, and in lieu of a pending legislation seeking to create a Commonwealth Telecommunications Regulatory Commission.

Board Chairman Jesus T. Guerrero said recent concerns raised by telephone users include the 25 cents charge per 411-directory assistance call.

He said the pre-existing franchise agreement with MTC (now Verizon) resulted in the minimal regulation of the Northern Marianas telecommunication industry.
