HAGÅTÑA, Guam (January 13, 2001 - Marianas Variety/PINA Nius Online)---If you thought that in Guam Americanization was in and Chamorro on the way out, think again.

A unique Chamorro school, Chief Gadao Academy of Arts, Science and Chamorro Culture, is helping preserve the island's Chamorro language and culture.

Administrator and master teacher David Flores Jr. described the school program. "It's a regular school. We follow the normal curriculum - the only difference is that we integrate culture and the language."

The academy follows the Department of Education's curriculum minimum requirements. It adds its blend of Chamorro projects, musical performance, field trips to the University of Guam regional research center and lessons on things such as coconut weaving and canoe building.
