PAPE‘ETE, French Polynesia (January 14, 2001 - Oceania Flash/SPC)---The next elections for French Polynesia’s Territorial Assembly will take place May 6.

The number of seats in the legislature recently was increased from 41 to 49.

The increase was given final approval last week by the French Conseil Constitutionnel (Constitutional Council) after both the French Senate and National Assembly earlier ratified the move.

In making the announcement, French Secretary of State for Overseas Administrations, Christian Paul, said the forthcoming vote to elect delegates to a larger legislature would allow French Polynesians to express their views under "more democratic conditions than in the past."
