SAIPAN, Northern Mariana Islands (January 18, 2001 – Saipan Tribune)---The Department of Public Safety received a total of 11,008 complaints last year. Of these, 4,297 were official cases handled by the Criminal Investigation Section.

Some 1,094 cases were sent to the Attorney General's Office for disposition.

Capt. Delbert Sablan said 150 cases were considered closed either due to lack of evidence or the complainants no longer were interested in pursuing them.

The remaining 3,053 cases are still under investigation.

An average of 400 cases are received by the Criminal Investigation Division each month. About 50 to 70 of the cases are not pursued because of victim disinterest.

During 2000 there were three homicide cases, but only one remains under investigation. The other two homicide cases were considered solved. From 1984 to the present, there are 19 unsolved homicide cases on the island.

Poker game robberies kept the police busy with 17 cases last year, two in hotels and three in residential districts.
