RATU MARA ADMITTED TO HOSPITAL IN NEW ZEALAND

SUVA, Fiji Islands (February 20, 2001 - FM96/PINA Nius Online)---Former Fiji President and Prime Minister Ratu Sir Kamisese Mara has been admitted to an Auckland hospital.

It's understood he was admitted following his return from a trip to Japan, where he attended a Japan-Pacific Islands symposium and other engagements.

Sources say although he was very ill when he was admitted, he is now feeling better.

His wife, Adi Lady Lala Mara, also a Fiji high chief, is on her way to New Zealand to be with the Lauan chief, who holds the title Tui Nayau.

Ratu Sir Kamisese has been traveling for the past three weeks. Before Japan, he was in Honolulu attending a Pacific Islands Conference of Leaders meeting.

[Note: Radio Australia quoted a spokesman for Auckland's Ascot Hospital as saying Ratu Mara "was admitted for five days for a check-up, but has now left".]
