SECRETARIAT OF THE PACIFIC COMMUNITY (SPC) Nouméa, New Caledonia Suva, Fiji Islands

February 21, 2001

A new position has been created with NZODA funds for a Pacific Island Statistical Research Officer (SRO) with the Statistics Programme at the Secretariat of the Pacific Community (SPC) in Nouméa.

The aim of this new position is to build statistical skills that are relevant to the region and to the SRO's home national statistics office in particular. The officer will work with Statistics Programme staff on issues such as developing websites, improving the availability of official data for the region, and improving the flow of information between national statistics offices in the region. There will be a strong focus on better use of electronic communication, the Internet in particular.

The SRO will assist SPC Statistics Programme staff in reviewing training materials, to ensure that they are of maximum relevance to the real needs and circumstances in the region, and will be involved in any work by Statistics Programme staff on specialized areas of official statistics, such as short-term indicators of economic activity. It is intended that the SRO will then pass on these expanded skills on return to his/her home office.

The Director General of SPC, Ms. Lourdes Pangelinan, is pleased to announce the appointment of Mr. Raymond Vuti to become the first person chosen to fill this new SRO position. Mr. Vuti is currently Assistant Statistician with the Vanuatu Statistics Office, and will take up duty as SRO in Nouméa, New Caledonia next month (March 2001).

The NZODA funding for this position is initially for a 12-month appointment. It is hoped that the results in the first year will lead to continued funding for this initiative.
