PAGO PAGO, American Samoa (February 26, 2001 - PIDP/CPIS)---The government owned American Samoa Community College's (ASCC) Board of Higher Education (BHE) voted on Friday not to renew Dr. Salu Hunkin's contract as President.

In a press statement issued after the Friday closed-door meeting, the Board stated that "[a]fter much deliberation, the Board of Higher Education has decided not to renew Dr. Salu Hunkin's contract as President of [ASCC]...

"It was a difficult decision for the Board to make and the Board expressed its appreciation to Dr. Hunkin for her commitment to the College and the various improvements at the College that were accomplished under her leadership," the press statement said.

The statement made clear that the Board "did not terminate or fire Dr. Hunkin."

Dr. Hunkin's contract expires June 1 and the Board has asked Dr. Hunkin to serve out her contract until then.

Dr. Hunkin can also reapply for the position of president of ASCC if she wants to, the press statement further stated.

The Board plans to submit to submit the names of three candidates for the president’s post to Governor Tauese Sunia by June 2001. From that short list, the Governor will make his choice.

Dr. Hunkin, the younger sister of Congressman Eni Faleomavaega declined to comment as she left to attend a meeting off-island.
