NOUMÉA, New Caledonia (February 26, 2001 - Oceania Flash/SPC)---An unidentified flying object (UFO) was sighted last week in the sky over New Caledonia's capital, Nouméa, the daily newspaper Les Nouvelles Calédoniennes reported.

Witnesses said the flying object was first spotted on Thursday afternoon and looked like a "silver ball."

A military maritime surveillance jet, which happened to be flying above the same area, also reported seeing the object.

The pilots, however, were more specific, adding that "something was hanging from a balloon."

"It was probably a meteorological sonde," the French territory's Coast Guard said.

"Pictures were taken, but they didn't come out and cannot be used to exactly identify the object."

The silver ball has not been sighted again since.
