To provide further information on our new website, we decided to release a special Update on the website itself, highlighting the features of our website, the membership benefits provided through the website and the media launch of the website!     _____    PRESS RELEASE   SPTO Launches New Website

www.spto.org is the new home of the South Pacific Tourism Organisation on the World Wide Web. SPTO Chief Executive, Mr. Lisiate 'Akolo, unveiled the new website, "South Pacific Islands Discover Paradise" on Tuesday, 27th February at the SPTO Boardroom.

"I am proud to present our redeveloped website, which will serve as an important marketing tool for SPTO, its members and for tourism in the South Pacific region. The website will focus on promoting the South Pacific destination, driving traffic through to members' website and providing member services online," stated Mr. 'Akolo.

He described the SPTO website as unique in the sense that it represents a hub of travel information on SPTO's 13 member countries, the exotic island destinations of the South Pacific: American Samoa, Cook Islands, Fiji, Kiribati, New Caledonia, Niue, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tahiti, Tonga, Tuvalu and Vanuatu under the SPTO banner at www.spto.org

"Our old website, launched in May 1996 was a popular source of travel information on the region, however, overtime it became inept in meeting the needs of our members," stated Mr. 'Akolo. He emphasized that the new website is a reassurance to all SPTO members that we are fully committed towards serving their needs as well as promoting the region through all mediums available.

The website is an excellent marketing opportunity for those SPTO member countries and private sector members who currently do not have the means to promote their activities on the Internet.

Our website will serve to be the source of all tourism information to and within the South Pacific. It will be the regional hub and the websites of the National Tourist Offices and private sector members are the links, feeding relevant and up to date tourism information. It will also serve to entice web surfers to the South Pacific island destinations.

Highlights of Spto.org include a tourism news section featuring the latest happenings at SPTO, regional tourism developments and deals and offers targeting tourists interested in the South Pacific destination. Other key features include a password protected back office exclusively available to all members and online shopping facilities at the SPTO Shop.

We extend our appreciation to the European Union for funding this project, the tourism industry members for their contributions and Inet Fiji for designing the "South Pacific Islands Discover Paradise" website.     _____  HIGHLIGHTS OF WWW.SPTO.ORG  Website Title: 'South Pacific Islands Discover Paradise' Website Address: www.spto.org  (To target travellers interested in the South Pacific we have also registered our website as www.southpacificislands.org )

The website will focus on promoting the South Pacific destination, driving traffic through to members' website and providing member services online.

Our website is unique in the sense that it represents a hub of travel information on SPTO's 13 exotic island destinations in the South Pacific. These include American Samoa, Cook Islands, Fiji, Kiribati, New Caledonia, Niue, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tahiti, Tonga, Tuvalu and Vanuatu.

SPTO was one of the pioneers in Internet marketing in the region. We launched our very first website in May 1996. It was a popular source of travel information on the region, however, overtime it became inept in meeting the needs of our members. Spto.org will be a more dynamic website, designed to meet the needs of our members and the modern traveller.

The Internet has become a popular source of travel information. Today it is increasingly common to plan and book holidays solely over the Internet, especially in our long haul markets. Our website is a reassurance to all SPTO members that we are fully committed towards serving their needs as well as promoting the region through all media available.

This website presents an excellent marketing opportunity for those SPTO member countries and private sector members who currently do not have the means to promote their activities on the Internet. It also resembles a turning point in the history of SPTO. We are moving towards self-sufficiency and are becoming more output oriented. We are justifying to our donor agencies that their funding is being utilized in the most efficient manner.

Spto.org will serve to be the source of all tourism information to and within the South Pacific. It will be the regional hub and the websites of the National Tourism Offices and private sector members are the links, feeding relevant and up to date tourism information. It will also serve to entice web surfers to our various South Pacific destinations. Highlights of spto.org include a tourism news section featuring the latest happenings at SPTO, regional tourism developments and deals and offers targeting tourists interested in the South Pacific destination. Other key features include a password protected back office exclusively available to members and online shopping facilities at the SPTO Shop. The development of a website is not sufficient. Our staff will be trained to maintain and update this website internally. The next phase of our website will be the development of niche sites which will target those who are interested in niche activities, such as diving, wedding & honeymoon or ecotourism in the South Pacific islands. Our website will be further tailored to meet our member's demands. Another highlight of the day is the release of the 1st quarter issue of the SPTO Magazine. Our magazine is a quarterly publication. It is membership benefit, which entails the latest tourism related developments in the South Pacific Region. The SPTO website and the latest issue of our tourism magazine will be presented at the biggest tourism trade and consumer show in Europe, International Tourismus Borse (ITB) from 3rd to 7th March, in Berlin. SPTO representatives will be attending ITB along with a large contingent from the region. Finally, I would like to extend our sincere appreciation to the European Union for funding this project. I would also like to thank the National Tourism Offices of SPTO's member countries and the tourism industry members for their contributions and InternetFiji.com (Inet) for designing the "South Pacific Islands Discover Paradise" website. Ladies and gentlemen, thank you for being here today and we look forward to your visits in the days ahead.     _____  EUROPEAN UNION PRESENTATION Following is the presentation by Mr. Frans Baan, Head of Delegation, Delegation of the European Commission for the Pacific, Suva.
