HONIARA, Solomon Islands (March 1, 2001 – Radio Australia)---The U.S. Department of State has urged Americans not to travel to the Solomon Islands due to the on-going political and ethnic violence in the country.

The department also warmed Americans currently in the Solomons to maintain a high degree of personal security awareness.

It said that ethnic unrest during the last two years has devastated the Solomon's economy and contributed to a general breakdown in law and order.

The department said police has been unable to restore security in the Solomons' capital, Honiara, despite the November peace accord intended to end the violence.

It said that despite the recent peace agreement, hundreds of automatic weapons remain in the hands of former militants.

The department also urged Americans to register with the U.S. Consular Agent in Honiara.
