ALOFI, Niue (March 1, 2001 -- Niue Economic Review/PINA Nius Online)---The principal of Niue High School, Takili Talagi, says that parents of students have welcomed the move to employ expatriate teachers instead of locals.

He claimed the 10 local teachers who resigned last year over a pay dispute were burned out.

But the Niuean staff members who resigned, graduates from New Zealand and Fiji colleges, say they have been "betrayed." They claim the government told them there were insufficient funds to give them a pay increase but have employed the expatriates at double what locals were getting, as well as providing free accommodations and other allowances.

It is understood the local teachers are now seeking legal advice from a New

Zealand lawyer.
