PAPE'ETE, French Polynesia (March 6, 2001 - Oceania Flash/SPC)---Customs officials at French Polynesia's Faa'a International Airport seized about a thousand rounds of ammunition that arrived aboard an incoming flight from Paris last week, the daily newspaper La Dépêche de Tahiti reports.

The ammunition, of .22 and .3 mm caliber, was transported as unaccompanied luggage, police said.

The ammunition, detected when the luggage containing it was processed through the airport's X-ray detector, was seized immediately.

Since the sender of the luggage could not be immediately established, an inquiry currently is under way to determine whom the intended recipient is.

Police said the smugglers were probably trying to take advantage of the current strike affecting Faa'a airport security services.
