NEWS RELEASE March 12, 2001

A two-year Family Health and Safety research project adapted from an international model and involving input from more than 2000 Samoans speaking about domestic violence, will form the focus of a national workshop in Apia this week.

The meeting will be chaired by Luagalau Foisaga Eteuati-Shon, the Secretary for Samoa's Ministry of Women's Affairs.

The two-day meeting will cover research done by the Samoa-based project workers Tina Tauasosi-Posiulai and Tima Leavai. SPC’s Women’s Development Advisor heading the PWRB, Amelia Siamomua, and SPC Demographer Chris McMurray will also be part of the technical support team to the meeting.

A focus on working groups to explain and debate the areas raised by the research will be part of the workshop, which will end with recommendations identifying future directions acting on the research.

The Family Health and Safety research study, formerly known as the Violence Against Women project, is funded by the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA).

Based on a World Health Organization questionnaire, the study represents two years of full-time work for a team of four based in Samoa. Posiulai and Leavai were involved with extensive training of interviewers across Samoa to assist with compilation of data, and face-to-face interviews with more than 1,600 women. More than 600 men were also interviewed for the study.
