FIJI’S PRESIDENT ILOILO ENDORSES SCHEDULING OF ELECTIONS

SUVA, Fiji Islands (March 23, 2001 – Radio Australia)---Fiji’s president, Ratu Josefa Iloilo, has endorsed the scheduling of the country’s elections from August the 25th to September the 1st.

As Radio Australia correspondent Ofa Kaukimoce reports, the president confirmed the dates at a meeting yesterday.

"It’s now up to the electoral commission to finalize the dates.

"A statement from the information ministry says the president will issue writs of elections on the 12th of July.

"It says the electoral commission will have the full responsibility of nominating candidates within fourteen days from the date the writs are issued.

"Meanwhile the caretaker Prime Minister Laisenia Qarase has written to the Commonwealth secretary general and the Australian and New Zealand foreign ministers, reiterating the government’s path back to constitutional legitimacy.
