NOUMÉA, New Caledonia (March 27, 2001 – Radio Australia)---A New Caledonian environmental group, Living Coral, has launched a bid to have a vast coral reef in the French territory added to the United Nations' list of world heritage sites.

The group has begun a petition to add the 2,000-kilometer (1,200-mile) reef to the UNESCO listing --along the lines of Australia's Great Barrier Reef.

Without protection, the environmental group fears major nickel processing projects underway in New Caledonia could irreparably harm the reef.
