CONGRESSMAN ROBERT A. UNDERWOOD Delegate from Guam U.S. House of Representatives Washington, D.C.

NEWS RELEASE March 28, 2001

Congressman Robert A. Underwood today was awarded the Asian Pacific Community Health Organization's national leadership award for his outstanding efforts to draw national attention to health issues and disparities among the nation's Asian and Pacific American population.

APCHO, a network of community-based organizations and community health centers which provide health services to Asian and Pacific Americans around the country, bestowed the award in recognition of Congressman Underwood's work as Chairman of the Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus in the 106th Congress.

True to form, the Congressman took the opportunity at the awards ceremony to urge APCHO to turn some of its attention to the Pacific islands.

"At my urging, APCHO, which provides leadership on a national level, is also going to take some leadership at the island level," the Congressman said.

"This is most welcome news, as we try to find and innovative ways to provide health care for our people."

APCHO, he said, agreed to provide technical assistance for the development of a Pacific Basin action plan. Its first meeting with Pacific community health center officials is slated to take place in American Samoa early this summer.

"That meeting will be followed up with a winter meeting in Guam for implementation, sometime before the end of the year," Underwood said.
