FIJI SOLDIERS FIRED ON IN EAST TIMOR

SUVA, Fiji Islands (April 4, 2001 – Radio Australia)---Fijian soldiers attached to New Zealand's peacekeeping operation in East Timor have been fired on but there were no injuries.

A New Zealand Army spokesman said the clash occurred on Monday, at the southern end of the border with Indonesian West Timor.

The confrontation begun after the Fijian peacekeepers' position was fired on from a nearby river.

The spokesman said the Fijian troops returned the fire and sent out a patrol to search the area.

An investigation into the incident is continuing.
