JAYAPURA, Indonesia (April 4, 2001 – ANTARA/Kabar-Irian)---Three Papua New Guinea nationals have been detained for bringing in and selling marijuana in Indonesia’s easternmost province of Irian Jaya, police said here Wednesday.

The three were caught red-handed with a kilogram (2.2 pounds) of dried marijuana, chief of the Irian Jaya Police’s detective unit, Senior Commissioner Tukirno, told ANTARA.

They said they would sell the marijuana in packs with prices ranging from Rp 25,000 (US$ 2.36) to Rp 100,000 (US$ 9.44) per pack, Tukirno said.

Drug trafficking in the province, involving Papua New Guinea nationals, has increased, he said.

It is done through the land border shared by Papua New Guinea and Irian Jaya, as well as through air links, he noted.

The case is under thorough investigation to identify the local buyers, Tukirno added.
