NOUMÉA, New Caledonia (April 8, 2001 - Oceania Flash/SPC)---Portfolios in New Caledonia's local government were made final Friday, following Thursday’s election of a new President and Vice-President, RFO reports.

On Thursday, Pierre Frogier (from the anti-independence RPCR, Rally for New Caledonia within the French Republic) was elected President to succeed Jean Lèques who resigned to devote full time to his duties as Lord Mayor of Nouméa.

The vice presidency was granted to pro-independence FLNKS (Kanak Socialist National Liberation Front) member Déwé Gorodey, who became the first Kanak woman leader to hold the French territory's second highest political position.

She also remains in charge of culture, youth and sports.

The new Cabinet still reflects a majority of members (seven out of eleven) from the anti-independence coalition.

Pro-independence FLNKS received only gets three portfolios and one of its components, Union Calédonienne (UC), one.

Portfolios held by members of the previous government who were re-elected have not changed hands. And newcomers have taken over the portfolios left vacant by outgoing ministers.

FLNKS President Roch Wamytan, who was expected to become Vice-President of the French territory's second government, is still in charge of custom (traditional) affairs.
