ALOFI, Niue (April 15, 2001 -- Niue Economic Review/PINA Nius Online)---Attempts by Niue Premier Sani Lakatani and MP Toke Talagi to convince two regional organizations to reinstate conferences in Niue next month have failed.

Forum Secretariat head Noel Levi has confirmed that the May regional education ministers’ meeting now will be held in Auckland, New Zealand. So will a University of the South Pacific council meeting.

Niue expressed concern at the cancellations, caused by the lack of scheduled air services to the island following the loss of Royal Tongan Airlines flights.

It said it hoped the air services problem would be solved by the time of the meetings.

Meantime, a meeting of regional information technology specialists this week also has been moved -- from Niue to Suva, Fiji.

Tourism property owners on Niue were looking forward to the meetings because of the dramatic downturn in the visitor industry caused by the cancellation of flights.
