APIA, Samoa (April 23, 2001 - Samoa Observer/PINA Nius Online)---Former Samoan Prime Minister and a Member of the Council of Deputies, Vaai Kolone, has passed away peacefully at Tupua Tamasese Meaole Hospital

A hospital spokesperson said Vaai, 89, died from old age.

As the first leader of the Human Rights Protection Party (HRPP) in 1979, Vaai became Samoa’s fourth prime minister in 1981. He was later the first non-Tama a Aiga to be elected as a Member of the Council of Deputies.

Vaai was a self-man made who built his fortune from farming in Asau, Savai‘i.

When most people were still trying to eke out a living in Apia, Vaai’s extended family was developing plantations of cocoa, copra, taro, taamu and other agricultural products on Samoa’s "Big Island."
