YAREN, Nauru (May 3, 2001 - Radio Australia)---A delegation from the West Papua independence movement is in Nauru for talks with new President Rene Harris.

Papua Council Presidium Deputy Chairman Thom Beanal leads the delegation.

Since Nauru has been chosen as host of this year’s Pacific Island Forum meeting, the West Papuan leaders say they view early consultation with President Harris as crucial to ensuring a fair hearing at the annual leaders’ summit in August.

Last week, it was announced that Indonesia would be admitted to the Forum as a dialogue partner, a move publicly welcomed by the independence movement.

At last year’s summit in Kiribati, and with Nauru’s help, the West Papua issue was included in the Forum's final communiqué for the first time.

Pacific leaders called on Indonesia to resolve its differences with the secessionist movement peacefully.
