SOLOMON ISLANDS MP’S WAIT FOR ALLOWANCE MONEY

HONIARA, Solomon Islands (May 10, 2001 - Solomon Islands Broadcasting Corporation/PINA Nius Online)---Solomon Islands Members of Parliament are waiting for allowances to cover the costs of their just ended meeting.

Speaking in Parliament, MP for Central Kwara‘ae Fred Fono said that during the meeting some Members of Parliament received housing eviction orders because their rent was not paid by the government.

He said MPs were embarrassed, especially when they were in Honiara with their families.

And, as a result, some MPs left Honiara for their constituencies because they were not able to cope with the situation personally.

He said food allowances were only partially paid.

The crisis came as the government faced a continuing cash shortfall following two years of Guadalcanal-Malaita ethnic conflict and the close down of major industries.
