FSM RATIFIES PACIFIC ISLANDS FORUM SECRETARIAT AGREEMENT

PALIKIR, Pohnpei, Federated States of Micronesia (May 11, 2001 - FSM Information Services)---On Thursday, President Leo A. Falcam signed the Agreement that recognizes and establishes the Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat.

Coincidentally, May 10 was Constitution Day in the Federated States of Micronesia.

Friday, the Instrument of Ratification also was signed by Secretary Ieske K. Iehsi of the Department of Foreign Affairs.

The Agreement was approved by a majority of the members of the Pacific Islands Forum during last year’s summit meeting in Kiribati.

The FSM delayed signing until completion of its consultation process with the FSM Congress.

Three other Forum members already have formally ratified the agreement. They are:

Thursday’s signing ceremony was held in the President’s office, witnessed by Vice President Redley Killion, Acting Secretary David Panuelo, staff of the Department of Foreign Affairs, staff of the President’s office and members of the local media.
