TWO EARTHQUAKES ROCK NORTHERN PAPUA NEW GUINEA

PORT MORESBY, Papua New Guinea (June 7, 2001 – Radio Australia)---Northern Papua New Guinea has been shaken by two strong earthquakes Thursday.

The two quakes occurred within a few hours of each other, near the northern town of Lae. The first trembler measured 6.2 on the Richter scale. The second was 5.8.

Reports from the area say the quakes damaged or destroyed about 40 village houses, but appear not to have caused major damage.

Provincial officials in the area are continuing to assess the situation. They say so far they have not received any reports of casualties.
