PORT VILA, Vanuatu (June 13, 2001 - Vanuatu Weekly/PINA Nius Online)---Port Vila's Bauerfield International Airport now can handle up to 24 international jet airliners a day, Airports Vanuatu Ltd. chief executive Desmond Ross says.

The runway and apron upgrade allow operation of aircraft as big as Boeing 767s, he said.

"It is up to the tourist and hotel industry to find the passengers," Mr. Ross told a Rotary meeting.

Airports Vanuatu Ltd. now operates the three international airports in Vanuatu: Port Vila - Bauerfield International Airport, Espiritu Santo - Pekoa International Airport and Tanna - White Grass International Airport.

Pekoa International Airport at Luganville on Espiritu Santo has been strengthened to allow operation of Boeing 737, or similar, aircraft, he said.

Tanna’s White Grass International Airport is now open to aircraft of the Dash 8 or ATR 42 types.
