HONIARA, Solomon Islands 9June 23, 2001 – Radio Australia)---The Isabel government will suspend all logging operations in the province for an indefinite period, starting Monday.

Provincial Premier Jacob Pitu confirmed that his government is taking the action because of continued breaches of laws and environment regulations by logging companies and operators.

Mr. Pitu said his action results from revelations contained in a report submitted to the province by government technical officers who visited all Isabel logging camps.

The report showed that all the logging operators were breaching national laws and provincial ordinances.

Mr. Pitu said that as a result, the felling of trees or loading of existing rounded logs onto vessels will be suspended.

He said the provincial government is taking the tough measures to combat years of malpractice by logging companies that has affected Isabel's people, land, forests and environment.
