TONGAN BAKERY OPENS IN TARAWA, KIRIBATI

NUKU‘ALOFA, Tonga (June 25, 2001 - PIDP/CPIS)---A new branch of Alfred Cowley & Sons bakery has opened in Tarawa, Kiribati.

General Manager Alfred Cowley said the capital's population of some 40,000 has a daily diet of primarily of rice, fish, and bread.

But Local bread cost US$ 8.95 per loaf.

That's when A. Cowley & Sons stepped in.

"Some guys approached me and I went over in February this year to do a feasibility study," Mr. Cowley said.

"It was then apparent "that the market is there," which resulted in the opening of A. Cowley & Sons Tarawa branch on June 7."

Mr. Cowley's partner in Kiribati is Paul Mclaughlin.
