SAMOA STUDIES USE OF PARAQUAT IN SUICIDES

APIA, Samoa (June 26, 2001 - Samoa Observer/PINA Nius Online)---"Can Samoa Afford Paraquat?" was the theme of a one-day symposium in Apia following the growing number of Samoans using Paraquat to commit suicide.

The symposium, coordinated by the Faataua le Ola organization, heard that many who commit suicide in Samoa use the pesticide and the country is rated 38th on the World Health Organization’s list of suicide severity.

Since 1979, 363 people have used Paraquat to commit suicide and Samoa’s suicide rate is 11.8 per 100,000 persons.
