NIUE POPULATION DECLINE CONTINUES

ALOFI, Niue (June 27, 2001 - Niue Economic Review/PINA Nius Online)--Niue's population continues its downhill trend.

The island's Statistics Department estimates the usually resident population was 1,748 on June 18, a decrease of 21 people since the previous estimate for the first quarter of 2001.

The usually resident population includes all people who have lived or are intending to live in Niue for a period of 12 months or more.

Niueans hold New Zealand citizenship.

An estimated 15,000 live in New Zealand, primarily in the Auckland area.
