JAPAN HOSTS PACIFIC ACADEMIC SUMMIT, STRONG ISLANDS PARTICIPATION

TOKYO, Japan (July 11, 2001 - PINA Nius Online)---The Japanese Government will host the Second Pacific Academic Summit, which opens at the University of the Ryukyus, Okinawa, on Saturday.

This summit is one of the follow-ups to the Pacific Island Leaders Meeting (PALM 2000) held in Tokyo and Miyazaki, Japan last year.

The strong Pacific Islands participation in the Okinawa summit is expected to include:

The participants also will visit Ritsumeikan Asian Pacific University and the Institution of Asian Pacific Studies, Waseda University, to discuss the possibility of educational exchanges.

The University of the Ryukyus was identified as a focal point for Japanese university cooperation with tertiary education institutions in the Pacific.

The first summit was held during July last year.

After this a Japanese delegation, including government officials and academic staff, visited Pacific Islands countries for further discussion.

Meantime, in Apia, the Samoa Observer reported that National University of Samoa Vice Chancellor Magele will sign cooperation and student exchange agreements with the University of the Ryukyus, Nagano College of Nursing and Asian Pacific University.
