NUKU‘ALOFA, Tonga (July 13, 2001 - PIDP/CPIS)---The results of a recent Tonga Environmental Management and Planning Project (TEMPP) assessment of the water quality of Neiafu Harbor in Vava‘u are now being evaluated.

Neiafu is the second largest urban area in Tonga.

TEMPP studies are an undertaking of the Ministry of Marine Affairs in collaboration with the environment department. Funding is provided by Australia.

An earlier study was carried out at Fanga‘uta Lagoon, examining the water quality, sedimentation and related matters.

The environmental impact assessments determine pollution levels and the safety of Tongan waters to humans and to flora and fauna living in the lagoons and other ocean areas surrounding the Tongan islands.

The studies also alert officials to environmental problems in need of resolution.
