HONIARA, Solomon Islands (July 13, 2001 – Radio Australia)---The Solomon Islands has a new Foreign Minister.

He's the Member for East Makira, David Sitai.

He'll take over from Danny Philip, who resigned last month to concentrate on serving his electorate.

However, Mr. Sitai was not the first choice for Foreign Minister by Prime Minister Manasseh Sogavare's government.

It first offered the job to Opposition Member of Parliament Patterson Oti, but he refused to switch sides.

The Solomon Islands is set to go to the polls before the end of the year.
