HONOLULU, Hawai‘i (Spring/Summer 2001 – Pacific Business Center)---The Office of Insular Affairs, U.S. Department of the Interior, recently notified the University of Hawai‘i’s Pacific Business Center Program that it will award the Center a grant for $55,000 to develop marketing materials to promote sport fishing in Yap and Palau.

The grant from OIA will be used by the Center to produce a 15-minute video, a brochure, and a web site.

It will cover the cost of bringing out to Yap and Palau, sport fishing writers from several of the major sport fishing magazines that cover sport fishing in the Pacific.

Both the Yap Visitors Bureau and the Palau Visitors Authority have committed matching funds for this grant, and Continental Micronesia has agreed to provide reduced fare tickets to support this project.

In addition to funding the video, brochure and web site, the grant will also be used to fund "Micronesia Sport Fishing Night," a major promotional event scheduled for Honolulu in early November. The event will feature the newly developed video, brochure, web site and magazine articles on sport fishing in Yap and Palau to showcase sport fishing opportunities in the two island states.

"Micronesia Sport Fishing Night" will allow the Center to test market the sport fishing promotional materials and activities in Honolulu.

The event will also be used to show Yap and Palau hotels and visitors bureaus how they can use these marketing tools to market their sport fishing product.

Business Development Manager C.L. Cheshire, who has been working to prepare the grant proposal for the past year, is also working with Yap and Palau to develop procedures and training materials for certifying boats and sport fishing guides.
